Did you know that 80% of learning is through vision?
  • Behavioural optometry is more than just checking if you can see clearly.  It is an expanded area of practice because it takes into account visual motor and visual processing skills.
  • We take a holistic approach to ensure that your child has the strength and stamina to keep up with all the near demands placed on them.
  • We do this by assessing how their eyes and brain process visual information, and use it to measure how this processing affects your child’s performance and behaviour.
  • Our exams include a comprehensive review of learning related skills: focussing, teaming, tracking  and vision information processing skills

Signs to Look for - Find the Problem

  • Are they complaining of sore eyes?
  • Do they hold things too close?
  • Are they saying things are blurry?
  • Do they lose their place when reading?

Our Action Plan for Your Child

Reading requires very fine eye movements to be made. As well as fixating and following along a line of text, children must also be able to make the fine adjustment needed to read to the end of one line, then accurately find the next one down to begin reading. If the slow pursuit movements or fast saccadic “jump” movements necessary for reading are not accurate, there can be very visible ramifications.Unlike convergence and accommodation which develops very early in an infant’s life (e.g., crawling), fine eye tracking skills do not actually mature until they are around 5 years of age.  As developmental milestones, some children may take longer until they learn these skills.  However, if they do not track well by the time they are 7 years old, this is when reading may be affected.
