Cogmed & Working Memory

Cogmed & Working Memory

What is Working Memory?

Working memory is a thinking skill that focuses on “memory in action”—the ability to juggle and manipulate multiple bits of information at the same time. For example, you are using your working memory during a conversation as you remember details and respond based on the information you received. You are using your working memory as you recall the steps of a recipe while preparing a dish.

Working memory allows you to store and use temporary information to carry out cognitive tasks like language, comprehension, reading, learning or reasoning. Think of it as a temporary sticky note in your brain that holds new information so that the brain can work with it briefly or connect it with other information.

Every day we use our working memory to complete our tasks and learn new things.

What is Cogmed?

Cogmed is a computerised program that specifically targets and improves the working memory and attention in kids, teens and adults.

Sitting within ‘behavioural optometry’, which focuses on the child’s visual processing skills and ability, Cogmed fuses neuroscience, psychology, optometry and technology to support improvements in a child’s attention and learning skills – “how you use what you see”.  This is a nice adjunct to the in-office Vision Therapy currently provided for binocular difficulties, strabismus and amblyopia as well as vision processing difficulties. With Cogmed’s game design plus close professional support, this evidence-based treatment aims to deliver lasting benefits.

The Cogmed program offered at Eyecare Kids includes professional coach support as well as access to the online computerised program of exercises. This includes:

  • Initial interview
  • Start-up session
  • Five weeks of weekly personal coaching
  • Review
  • Access to the Cogmed Training Web to track progress
  • Cogmed Extension Training (12 months)

How Can We Help?

Aside from Cogmed, we can help improve working memory and attention by:

Thorough and Thoughtful Evaluation

We will evaluate your or your child to determine areas where you may be struggling. If we find out that working memory and attention is the reason, we will implement steps to enhance them with our tried-and-tested solutions.

Targeted Tests for Memory Skills

We will do a DVIP testing (developmental vision information processing), a comprehensive assessment that tests your ability to process and understand what you see. This includes standardised memory tests (auditory and visual) that allows us to assess your memory skills.

Tailored Vision Therapy Program

Following on from that, a tailored developmental vision therapy program can be devised to help develop the skills you or your child may be having difficulty with.
