Strabismus Management

Our team provides comprehensive clinical care for strabismus, integrating advanced diagnostics with individualised treatment in a supportive setting.

How We Manage Strabismus

Strabismus, or eye misalignment, can be effectively managed with early detection and tailored treatment. The goal is to improve eye alignment, support binocular vision, and prevent long-term visual issues. Depending on the type and severity of your child’s strabismus, our optometrists may recommend one or a combination of the following treatments:

Prescription Glasses or Lenses

If your child’s strabismus is linked to a refractive error such as farsightedness, nearsightedness, or astigmatism, we may prescribe glasses or specialised lenses to help reduce eye strain and improve alignment. Correcting the underlying prescription can often help the eyes work together more effectively and may significantly improve the degree of misalignment.

Patching Therapy

For some children with strabismus, especially when one eye is stronger than the other, patching the stronger eye can encourage the weaker eye to work harder and improve binocular vision. Our optometrists will provide personalised guidance on the duration and frequency of patching based on your child’s specific condition and age.

Vision Therapy

Vision therapy is a structured program of exercises designed to improve eye coordination, focusing ability, and depth perception. It is often used alongside glasses or patching to strengthen binocular vision and support long-term eye alignment.

Prism Lenses

Prism lenses can be prescribed to help align the eyes and reduce double vision. They are particularly useful in cases where full surgical correction is not required or as a temporary measure while other therapies take effect.

Surgical Intervention

In some cases, surgery may be recommended to reposition the eye muscles and achieve proper alignment. Surgery is carefully considered and planned in consultation with paediatric ophthalmologists to ensure the best functional and cosmetic outcomes.

Advantages of Strabismus Treatment

  • Improves eye alignment and visual comfort
  • Supports healthy binocular vision and depth perception
  • Reduces the risk of amblyopia (lazy eye)
  • Enhances confidence and quality of life
  • Tailored treatment plans to suit your child’s specific needs

Strabismus is most effectively managed when identified early, so timely intervention is crucial.
